JOB SHARING AT THE WHITE HOUSE
27 / 05 / 08

I know this is a fantasy but indulge me for a minute. Suppose the good people of the US couldn’t decide between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Suppose the only way round this was to alter the constitution and have both sharing the presidency of the United States. How would that work then? No problem if one of them got ill, a wider range of viewpoints and experiences, two for the price of one. And apart from the oval office needing his and her desks, the main obstacle I can see is the press’s obsession with unity. Every interview would be an interrogation searching for division, disagreement and potential conflict, so that blame for all failures could be laid at the lack of consensus between them. Yet difference of opinion is what moves us all forward. If it were not for a second voice providing a different view, there would be no healthy debate, no quarrelsome discontent with the status quo, no positive competition to do things better, faster. So let us celebrate two heads for the price of one. Presidents have often shared their world with others. Think of John and Bobby Kennedy, Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, Bill and Hillary Clinton. Hang on a second. Looks like we already have a job share! Sorry Barack, bad idea. Unless, that is, your wife Michelle…?
