Normally, my summers aren't busy. Many companies pause their learning and development activities until September. I don't mind because it gives me time to catch up on my garden and writing. But this year, I was given the chance to develop a whole new blended learning leadership intervention for a global client. What's more, I didn't have to travel to do it. I could work at my desk.

So I combined the opportunity of desk work and the great weather we had this summer in London by moving my office outside into the garden. I made a table from a large piece of ash, cleared the ivy from the wall behind me, bounced the wi-fi signal into the garden and plugged in. It was bliss. The only intrusions into my concentration were birds, bees and the occasional police siren (well, I live in a city).

The program I was designing blended virtual and face to face learning. It consists of podcasts, webinars, questionnaires, on-line tools, teleconferences and two real-time meetings in Hamburg. Although participants still have to make the effort to be in Hamburg for 3 days at a time, they are supported for the rest of their time by us reaching out to them with support, reminders, materials and activities.

Clients prefer these programs because they believe it saves them money. We prefer these programs because they help embed the learning we provide. So which ever way you look at it, there will be gains. Let's see.
