The Dark Side

Some time ago I became accredited to use the Hogan Development Survey that measures our propensity to overuse a strength. Last month I became accredited to use the Leadership Versatility Index which looks at the same problem. Why is it that these tools are so helpful?

Because senior executives are not often told when some behaviour or trait they used to value and which got them where they are, may not longer be appropriate. Yet they keep on doing it. Furthermore, the higher up the career ladder they go, the more they may experience new and challenging situations, or even come under considerable pressure. In times like these, we fall back on our default ways of approaching things and just keep dong them more and more.

Psychometric tools, particularly those that include 360 degree feedback from colleagues, are a terrific way of helping people see how something that used to work may no longer be helpful. Our job is lead people back from the dark to the light. That may sound a little Messianic, but honestly, inspiring people is part of the job.
